Chapter 01 · Road Rules

Driving in the Czech Republic

Traffic regulations in the Czech Republic are aligned with European standards but include several country-specific rules worth reading before you cross the border. This chapter outlines the most relevant ones for visiting drivers.

Speed limits

Urban areas50 km/h (default within municipality signs)
Outside built-up areas90 km/h on regular roads
Expressways110 km/h
Motorways (dálnice)130 km/h, unless lower limit posted

Lower limits frequently apply through tunnels, near interchanges and during reconstruction works.

Headlights and visibility

Dipped headlights are mandatory year-round, day and night, on all roads.

Reflective vests must be carried inside the cabin and worn when exiting the vehicle on the carriageway.

Winter tyre period

From 1 November to 31 March, vehicles must be equipped with winter tyres if snow, ice or frost is present on the road, or if such conditions can reasonably be expected.

The minimum tread depth for winter tyres in this period is 4 mm.

Alcohol and substances

The Czech Republic enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for alcohol behind the wheel — there is no permitted blood-alcohol level for drivers.

Mandatory equipment

  • Warning triangle
  • Reflective vest (one minimum, per driver)
  • First-aid kit appropriate to vehicle category
  • Set of spare bulbs (for vehicles using filament lamps)
  • Spare wheel or sealant kit

Mobile phones

Use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving is prohibited. Hands-free systems are permitted.
